Circa 1890, Malabar Coast
An exceptional example of late 19th-century ecclesiastical craftsmanship, this Gothic Revival donation panel originates from a coastal church along the historic Malabar Coast. Hand-carved from solid hardwood, it features a beautifully detailed shield motif, floral carvings, and a central rosette — all hallmarks of the Gothic aesthetic adapted to South Indian Christian architecture.
The lower section includes a finely modeled semi-circular marble basin, likely used for alms or holy water, with ornate foliate carving that reflects both European influence and local artisan skill. The piece’s graceful proportions, warm patina, and devotional symbolism make it an evocative relic of colonial-era church interiors.
Today, it stands as a remarkable sculptural statement — ideal for a heritage-inspired home, curated gallery, or hospitality setting that values historical artistry and spiritual resonance.
