Palm-Leaf Manuscript of the Ramayana

C 19th century, South India

Palm-Leaf Manuscript of the Ramayana

This palm-leaf manuscript contains the Ramayana, the Sanskrit epic of Lord Rama attributed to Valmiki. Palm-leaf writing, practiced in India for over two millennia, involved inscribing dried leaves with a stylus and blackening the letters with ink for clarity. By the 19th century, such manuscripts were still produced in regions like Odisha, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu, serving as sacred objects for recitation and ritual. These framed folios preserve both the timeless story of dharma and devotion, and the enduring craft of South Asia’s manuscript tradition.
