c. 1930, Rajputana
Reverse glass painting is originally a European form of art. It traveled to India via the Indo-Chinese trading routes in the 19th century. Artists were often commissioned to paint portraits of members of the royal court. This is one such painting depicting a woman, seated in a red chair holding a pink rose. She is in a richly decorated room that has lush green drapes and oral print. The appearance of her room coupled with the ne gold jewelry she is wearing tells us that this is a woman of high status.
