Early to Mid 20th Century, Gujarat
his finely hand-carved wooden cow yoke (hal-yug or balad yug) originates from Gujarat, Western India, and dates to the early to mid 20th century (circa 1920–1950).
Crafted from a single piece of seasoned hardwood, the yoke was traditionally used to harness a pair of bullocks or cows for plowing fields or pulling carts. Its surface features geometric carvings and engraved motifs, often symbolic of prosperity and protection for the animals and the farmer. Faint traces of red and green pigment remain, suggesting ritual or decorative use beyond practical function.
The yoke exemplifies the seamless blend of utility and folk artistry typical of rural Gujarat. Every carved line reflects both the craftsman’s skill and his connection to agrarian life — where even the most utilitarian object was imbued with aesthetic and cultural meaning.
